Millions Unite at Maha Kumbh 2025: A Divine Start with the First Shahi Snan
The Maha Kumbh Mela, renowned as the world’s largest religious gathering, commenced today in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with the first ‘Shahi Snan’ (royal bath) taking place on Paush Purnima. This auspicious event attracted millions of devotees to the Triveni Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers—where they participated in ritualistic bathing, believed to cleanse sins and facilitate spiritual liberation.
By 9:30 AM, over 6 million (60 lakh) pilgrims had taken the holy dip, marking a significant start to the six-week festival, which is expected to draw more than 450 million (45 crore) visitors by its conclusion on February 26, 2025.
The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented extensive arrangements to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims. Infrastructure developments include the establishment of over 150,000 tents, enhancement of sanitation facilities with 150,000 portable toilets, and the deployment of 40,000 police officers to ensure security. Advanced technologies, such as AI-managed crowd control and multilingual chatbot guides, are being utilized to manage the vast congregation effectively.
The festival holds profound religious significance, with devotees believing that bathing at the Sangam during this period absolves sins and aids in attaining salvation. The event also serves as a platform to showcase India’s rich cultural heritage, with various religious sects, including a transgender akhara, participating in the rituals.
The Maha Kumbh Mela will feature several key bathing dates following Paush Purnima, including Makar Sankranti on January 14, Mauni Amavasya on January 29, and Vasant Panchami on February 3, each expected to draw millions of participants.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of safety and sanitation, urging pilgrims to adhere to guidelines and cooperate with officials to ensure a harmonious and spiritually fulfilling experience for all attendees.
